Managing Welsh and English renditions
Welsh and English versions of documents can be created and managed within a Welsh SI project. In Lawmaker, a specific Welsh or English version of a document is called a rendition.
This page explains how to view and create Welsh and English renditions within a bilingual project, including the creation of a Welsh or English rendition from a translated file generated outside of Lawmaker.
Managing different renditions of a working version
When viewing the Project tab for a Welsh SI, all working versions, snapshots, and significant versions can contain an English and a Welsh rendition.
Working versions
A working version which contains both a Welsh and English rendition will show two ‘Edit’ buttons, one under each language heading:

A working version containing both an English and Welsh rendition
A working version which contains only one language rendition will show an ‘Edit’ button below one language heading, indicating that a rendition exists for that language. A ‘Create rendition’ button (represented by a plus + symbol) will show under the heading for the language rendition which does not yet exist:

A working version containing an English rendition only
In the screenshot below, the working version labelled v1 contains an English rendition only; v2 contains a Welsh rendition only; and v3 contains both an English and Welsh rendition:

Three working versions: one with an English rendition, one with Welsh, and one with both languages
Snapshots
By clicking the drop-down arrow to the left of the working version label, you can expand the list of snapshots under your working version:

A list of snapshots containing a mix of single-language and multiple language renditions
Snapshots are created when you perform certain actions in Lawmaker:
Auto-recover snapshots are created each time you save a document in the Editor;
PDF snapshots can be generated when you create a PDF, either from the Project tab or from within the Editor;
Shared snapshots are created when you choose to share a working version with another organisation.
Like their parent working versions, snapshots can contain a Welsh and an English rendition. For example, if you are editing the Welsh rendition of a working version, and you Save the document, a snapshot containing the full content of that Welsh rendition will be created under the working version.
The presence or absence of a Welsh or English rendition of a snapshot is indicated by the ‘view document’ button, which appears under the CY or EN column depending on whether a Welsh or English rendition exists for that snapshot.
In the screenshot above, the Shared snapshot and the top PDF snapshot both contain an English and Welsh rendition. The earlier PDF snapshot and the auto-recover snapshots each contain one language rendition.
Significant versions
A list of significant versions appears on the right-hand side of the Project tab.
Like working versions and snapshots, significant versions can also contain an English rendition, a Welsh rendition, or both. The presence or absence of the ‘view document’ button under each language heading shows you whether a rendition exists for that language.
In the screenshot below, the ‘Shared’ significant version contains both a Welsh and an English rendition, as indicated by the two ‘view document’ buttons:

Creating the other language rendition
A newly created working version of a Welsh SI will consist of a single language rendition, Welsh or English.
You select the language of this initial rendition when you create a new project or a new working version and choose a Starting language:

On the project tab, a working version which contains a single language rendition will display a plus + button under the other language heading. This button allows you to create the corresponding rendition in the other language.
In the screenshot below, the Welsh rendition of v1 has not yet been created:

To add a corresponding Welsh or English rendition to a working version which currently contains only one language rendition, click the plus + button under the other language heading. You will be asked to choose between two options:
Create a blank rendition in the other language, to begin drafting the other language rendition from scratch, based on an empty template document;
Import the XML of a translation of the original language rendition, to import the XML of a translated version.
Importing a translated rendition
When you choose to upload the XML of a translated rendition, Lawmaker will perform the following checks:
An XML validation check on the uploaded file, to ensure the document is in a valid format;
A comparison between the existing language rendition and the uploaded rendition, to ensure that the translated version has been created from this original rendition.
Any XML validation errors will prevent you from continuing with the upload process.
Discrepancies between the unique identifiers in the originating rendition and the uploaded rendition will not prevent you from continuing with the upload process, but you will see a warning message:

If this is expected (for example, if you know that the translated version was created from a different working version within the Bill or SI project), you can safely proceed. Otherwise, please double-check that you are uploading the translated version to the correct working version.
