Images

You can insert an image (in jpeg or tiff format) into your document in the Editor.

Insert image modal with file upload, width and height setting, alternate text, image alignment and image caption fields together with Insert and Cancel buttons

How to insert an image

  1. Place your cursor on the provision where you would like to insert the image.

  2. Either select Insert image from the right-click context menu or select Insert menu> Insert image from the toolbar.

  3. Upload a new image or select from an existing image that has previously been uploaded. To upload a new image click Upload, navigate to the folder where your image is saved, select it and click Open.

  4. Add Alternate text describing the image to help make your document accessible. (See What’s the alternative? How to write good alt text – Design102.)

  5. Adjust the Width or Height as necessary (the aspect ratio will be maintained by Lawmaker) and set the alignment (left, centred or right).

  6. Optionally add a caption which will appear under the image.

  7. Click Insert.

Formats, sizing and resolution

  • You can only upload and insert images that are in jpeg or tiff format.

  • In the Editor, the image will be displayed at a relative size for convenience of viewing. The PDF version of the document will show the image’s true size.

  • The system will warn you when the image quality is less than the recommended resolution of 300 dpi which required for print publishing. Making the image smaller will increase the resolution.

Maximum image size to fit on page

  • The maximum height of an image is 228mm (or 235mm if it does not have a caption). If your image exceeds this, it will not render in the PDF.

  • The maximum with on an image is 147mm. Any image wider than this will ‘spill’ over to the right of the page, which may cause issues later in the publication process.

See ‘How to update image information’ below if you need to reduce the size of an image that has been inserted so it displays properly in the PDF.

Inserting multiple images in succession

In some cases, you may want to insert multiple images in succession, e.g., multiple pages of a form.

To add another image immediately after an existing image:

  1. Turn on Full Tags (Using tags when drafting).

  2. Next to the existing image, place your cursor between the closing ‘Img block’ and ‘Content’ tags (see screenshot below).

  3. Select Insert menu> Insert image from the toolbar or right-click and select Insert image.

  4. Follow the remaining instructions in ‘How to insert an image’ above.

  5. Repeat for any successive images.

Avoid attempting other workarounds like creating new provisions (e.g., paragraphs) for each successive image and then deleting the ‘num’ element. This results in badly formed XML and may cause issues with publication.

How to delete an image

To delete an image:

  1. Click on the image in the Editor.

  2. Select ‘img block’ from the breadcrumb and press delete or backspace (see screenshot below).

The image will be removed from the document without affecting the element it was inserted in.

The image will not be removed from list of images that are available in the ‘Insert Image’ modal, so it can be reinserted if required.

How to update image information

To update the properties of an existing image:

  1. Click on the edit button to the bottom right of the image.

  2. Make changes to any of the fields in the “Manage Image Properties” dialogue box

  3. Click Update.

Click on Img block

The system will update the image in the document with the changes.

Inserting a form or complex table into your document

If you want to add a form, notice, formatted table, or similar content within your draft on Lawmaker, the best way to do this is using images.

Create a high resolution image of each page of the form etc., and insert each image using the instructions in How to insert an image above.

See How to create high resolution images of forms etc. from Word to insert into Lawmaker for guidance on how to produce a high resolution image that can be used in Lawmaker.
